Export from Wordpress to Blogger

This post explorers how to export from a WordPress blog into a Blogger blog. There are two ways to do this automatically, but there is also a way to do it manually if you want to edit the XML that WordPress produces.

Existing Tools for Automating a Wordpress to Blogger Export

The following tool will work as an import/export (both ways) tool between Wordpress and Blogger. It also supports import and export between Blogger and both LiveJournal and Moveable Type blogs:

The instructions are to export (Manage -> Export) a WXR Wordpress export file from your WordPress blog and upload it to the Wordpress2Blogger hosted application. There is a limit of 1mb on the file export size, so if you have a larger WordPress export file, you will need to download the app and posted on your own servers: http://code.google.com/p/google-blog-converters-appengine/

Preparing Your Own Blogger Import using XML

It's sometimes better to prepare your own XML file for importing into Blogger if you need that level of control (assigning labels, adjusting timestamps, etc). To help you figure out how to get this done, here are two posts that show you what an XML Blogger import file looks like:

A Wordpress Export Can be the Starting Point for All Your Blogger Blogs

Using a CSV import tool like WP Importer, you can upload a CSV of all your data for your posts to your Wordpress self-hosted site. You simply import the CSV file, export to XML and reimport to your new subdomain on Wordpress.com (15MB limit on uploads). The steps are slightly different for Blogger blogs, since you would have to export to WXR, then convert it with one of the above tools before you can get the content into Blogger. But the cool thing is that CSV uploads make it easy to schedule posts (just use a date column in your CSV file), which makes it very easy to automatically schedule your posts in Blogger or Wordpress.com.
